I was invited to an outdoor evening wedding in September. The invite does not say forma attire, but I know that the men in the wedding party will be in tuxs. I am going to have to go shopping for a dress, but I have heard that you shouldnt wear black to a wedding. So if someone could give me an idea of how fancy and if black is okay for weddings that would be great. Thanks for your help.

  1. I haven't heard not to wear black. I have heard not to wear all white so that you don't steal the spot light from the bride. In September I would go with a brown dress especially for the evening or even a beige tan colored dress. I would keep it neutral.

  2. Any wedding that takes place on Saturday night is formal attire unless it says otherwise. You can wear any color you want except white. Sometimes there's nothing more sophisticated looking than a little black dress! Good luck!

  3. go for something elegant but not amazingly pricey or fancy but please don't wear something like a giant hat only old ladies wear them you could wear a headband instead :D

  4. I wouldn't wear black to a wedding. To older folks, it's disrespectful.

However, since so many people do wear black, you'll just disappear into the crowd of black. Details don't photograph well in black and you'll fade into the shadows.

Go for something more cheerful and stand out from the crowd.

  5. Wear a nice black dress for an evening wedding and be sure to have a shawl that perhaps is the same color as your shoes or purse (not both).

  6. I think black is OK for evening but I would consider something a little off the beaten path- because a lot of people like to be able to use that little black dress when they can and thus a lot of people show up in black.  I like the nice deep fall colors that are starting to come out- especially shades of purple and a dress in this color will last you into the holiday time.  The simpler the shape and pattern the more you can dress it up or down with accessories.  When in doubt about how fancy to get, I have often brought additional or fancier jewelry with me in my handbag once I got a glimpse of the other guests!  I have even gone so far as to bring a sheer wrap in addition to a cashmere cropped sweater to go over my dress but I think that is almost fashion paranoia. I admit.
