Question:

What author describes the culture and nature of Peru? (not Llosa)?

I say no Llosa because I didn't like much what I read from him, namely "Death in Andes". The language was too explicit, the characters too rough. Though it was exciting to read.

So I am looking to read authors who wrote about Peru, which are translated in English

Thanks

  1. Ricardo Palma is entertaining, but it will give you a look at Lima culture from the late 1800's and it tells mostly anecdotes from colonial times. Ciro Alegría with "El mundo es ancho y ajeno" which was translated as "Broad and Alien is the World" , Enrique Lopez Albújar with "Cuentos Andinos", and Manuel Scorza "Redoble por Rancas" would be your best bet.
