  1. Apart from some road vehicles which were converted to rail by replacing the road wheels with flanged ones, automobile engines have not been used to power trains.

Trains need much larger, heavier engines, usually diesel although gas turbines have been used in some countries.

The normal method of transmission is to couple the engine to a generator and use this to feed motors on each axle to give the final drive.

This method of traction (known as diesel-electric) was actually developed from 'conventional' submarines, which have diesel generators supplying current to motors which drive the propellers.

  2. Fuled engines are used to make electricity... that is what powers a locomotive...They are called traction motors.

  3. The engine designed for the Bugatti Royale car was used in railcars after modification.  Here is something you did not know.  Some railcars used in New South Wales, Australia were retrofitted with engines built for landing craft used in the D-Day assaults in Normandy in June 1944.

  4. Mercedes

  5. A conventional car engine does not produce the power required for a railroad locomotive.  However, some companies known for making car engines also make locomotive engines.  The best example is General Motors' (GM) Electro-Motive Division (EMD).
