The company keeps paying me 40c per mile for my private SUV that I am using at work all day, something they paid 2 years ago. Where can I find a current statistics on a national average? Although I dont mind driving I cant afford to do it anymore.

  1. The IRS allows 50-1/2 cents per mile for 2008.  You can claim the remaining 10-1/2 cents per mile on you Federal return.  Keep a log of your work miles.

The mile allowance for 2007 was 48-1/2 cents per mile.  See second URL below.

The mileage allowance for 2006 was 44-1/2 cents per mile.  See third URL below.

I would consider having a chat with your employer to have your mileage allowance increased to the current 50-1/2 cents per mile.

An addition.  The remaining 10-1/2 cents per mile is subject to 2-1/2 % of your adjusted gross.  Meaning after you have deductions over 2-1/2% of you adjusted gross can you deduct the 10-1/2 cents  per mile.  Have employer compensate you for the full amount of mileage allowance.  Otherwise recouping the remaining amount is extremely hard to do.
