I agree with the answer above, they founded modern western culture.

As for the bad well they did have massive amounts of slaves and did kill hundreds of thousands during their conquests. The Roman Empire wasn't all that bad, you know an Empire that big did have to do some harsh and inhumane things to maintain control. But things like gladiatorial games weren't necessary and without the slaves, there would have been no Empire and the Romans wouldn't have been as successful and prosperous as they were. I think the slaves deserve a lot of credit for the success of the Roman Empire.

Nothing. Most of what they did was common at the time. Compare them to the Spartans (who everyone holds in great esteem). The Spartans put an entire race of people into slavery and never let one of them rise above the class of 'slave'.
