Question:

What bait could I use that won't get stuck?

I like to fish in down by the dam in my town and there's lots of fish down there, but there are so many jagged flat rocks, my lours always get caught and I can't get them back. Any tips on what I should use? Also what would I use for fishing where there's lots of seaweed? Or, should I not fish in lots of seaweed?

Lots of questions, sorry, but I love to fish, and I'm a 21 yr old lady but I don't know how very well. So, I fish by myself and it's my favorite thing to do but I know I look rediculous losing all my bobbers and stuff all the time. Any help is appreciated really!

oh and another one, why do the fish always swallow my lours? They never just bite them, they go right down their thought into their belly and I have an awful time getting them out. Should I use a bigger hook?

  1. learn about the fish that you are fishing for target one specie and master it at a time. since you don't mention any fish types I can't even guess how to help but if you click on my name and read all I have helped with in my profile I would hope something in their hits home for you

  2. Real or plastic worms should work fine, they can be easily retrieved by reeling in. I'm not entirely sure how you lose your lures also. Maybe your not casting far enough. And you should try to not fish in an area with alot of seaweed. Your lures may be too small if the fish swallow them so easily. Make sure that they are fastened onto the hook well.

  3. From another lady who likes to fish, ABSOLUTELY NONE!

I think it all gets stuck!

  4. if you use a bigger hook that will give you more problems so use wax worms or even those long night crawlers.

  5. a twinkie

  6. use top floaters. As soon as you cast out, real your rod so it gets that steady action, but it won't get stuck and fish love them.

  7. Some great answers so far, one thing to help you are the following, they do work

  8. To stop snags, use weedless hooks and lures. Weedless hooks have a piece of wire that covers the point until a fish hits, which is when it is uncovered. This can prevent snags on rocks too. Also, weeds provide cover for some very nice fish, so weeds are a great place to fish. If you're using bobbers, lower your bobber to keep the bait shallow.

As for swallowed lures, odds are you're not setting the hook fast enough. A bigger hook might help, however, since it is a larger amount to swallow. However, this might prompt the fish to release it, thinking it bit off more than it can chew. Even a larger hook won't help if you take too long to set the hook.

As for the question about surface lures, go to the nearest store and look for Hula Poppers, but make sure you get the big ones, for the small ones are for fly fishing. You can put a weight on one of these and the weight will carry it out and keep it under water, but it stays off the bottom since it still wants to float, and odds are the weights won't snag as easily. The way they work is they sit on the surface and make a loud "bloop" sound and makes fish think it is a frog diving. Look around, as most lures have their function description on the package.

Diving plugs sit on the surface until retrieved, so these might help.

Also, a "buzzbait" might work, but then you run the risk of losing it.

If a fish swallows a lure, a pair of needlenose pliers can make retrieval easier, but sometimes you have to cut the line to save the fish (unless you eat it, then you can get it back when you clean it. That happened to me with a northern pike.)

So to sum it up: weedless lures; hula poppers with or without weights; buzzbaits; keep the distance from the bobber to the hook shorter.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  9. If you use rubber worms or soft bodied jigs try a texas rig.  The hook point is pushed to just under the surface of the body to prevent unwanted snags.  Also try surface lures.

If you are using a bobber then you are most likely using  bait.  Unless you are right on top of the strike the fish will take it deep.  If you through the fish back it's best to cut your line and leave the hook in the fish.  In time it will rust off and pass through.  This does less damage to the fish than trying to dig it out of their gullet.

Edit: Surface lures can be floating crank baits (Rapala), buzz baits (big spinner blade that beats the water), Hula Popper's are great for bass, or Jitter Bugs.  There are tons of them just look on the package and most lures will tell you how to work them and whether they are surface, mid or deep runners.

  10. Use teflon lures. They're non-stick.

  11. *************

well if ur just fishing with fake worms or other fake bait use a texas or carolina rig(a.k.a  weedless)

u can use top floater, there usually very light with a cup like indent at the mouth, so wen ur workin it one the water it makes noise and bobles so fish will see it

i guess ur just a catch and release fishwomen, i normally just get my lours back wen iam cleaning them, just get long pliers and pull em out

    some good sites

    these are basic rigs

  12. I would use spinners and don't let the bait settle down to the bottom.  Or you can try some floating baits like some of the Rapalas.  As for the swallowing the bates, make sure you are setting the hooks, when you start to feel a bite, set it hard.  This will help get it through the lip.

  13. Hi,since u really like fishing so much then maybe I can help u.bobbers are not your choice Cos u lack skills, maybe try to polish your skills too.u need a strong line that wont break easily,u can use garden claw use to clear the seaweed out at the place u frequent.just a small path for u to cast out.the fish swallow your lure is Cos of slack line or small hooks, but don't use bigger hooks just use gang hooks, like two hooks at a same line.losing gear is not a bad thing if the fish is biting there,I loose lots of gear every now n then.learn how to tie your hooks etc.by yourself n don't rely on your store then u will be so free to enjoy this hobby. Its very difficult to tell u how but even if that area is a pain when u have the skills u can avoid a snag by the feel of your line, with practice.for now i think u should just fish at the upper water column,3feet below the surface.use a float then with a trace bout 28inches n at its end near the hooks put a small float ball from gemini.do put some glowing beads near your hooks also shot equally distributed to end of hooks,u know a stop knot?remember the size of your catch over your hook's size is mainly about ten percent of your catch's body weight, even less minimum 7percent.It means that if your fish is 1000Gram then your bait should be 70-100Gram.so what size of hook depends on what bait/lure u use over what fish u wanna catch.pls practice more with skills for more enhancement in this sport is the key to personal satisfaction

  14. You can use live bait with a bobber and switch to braided line... my fav ir Fireline - it handles much better in rocks.

  15. Since I am a Master Baiter - here is what I would do.

I like a 'weedless' Carolina Rig for fishing around rocks and weeds.  However - chances are that the fish will still swallow the lure (because you probably won't feel the first nibble).

So start with googling Carolina Rig on exactly how to set that up.............

    Good luck.

PS - I put a space in my 'handle' to help avoid confusion between myself and that 'other' activity - hehehehehe
