Question:

What balls are competitive to Titleist Pro V1?

Hi all,

I've been golfing for about 6 months now and from just reading and talking to other players, all pretty much say that the Pro V1 is the best ball. Its no use for me to be spending big bucks on balls at the moment... thats because i'm still hitting them in the trees time-to-time, BUT a friend recently gave me a couple to bash around. I'm no pro but i was able to get the ball to back-spin on the green and it felt great off my putter. But i'm still not paying $10 for a bloody ball!!

Are there any balls on the market that represent the same performance as the Pro V1??

  1. Go pick up Golf Magazine's latest edition.  It tested 54 different golf balls.  Then you can decide what the best ball is for you.

  2. Titleist - Pro V1 $45

    Nike - ONE $35

    Bridgestone - e330 $40

Callaway - Tour 1 $40 (just won a patent lawsuit over the makers of the Pro V1 saying the Pro V1 stole their patents from this ball)

Titleist Pro V1 X-OUT $25 (Pro V1 with slight defects)

Most three piece balls will give very close to the same performance as a Pro V1

  3. Try Hogans.  I use them and they seem very comparable to ProV1s

  4. All of the balls in the same category as the pro vi are very similar. I just read an article in golf digest they tested just about all of the golf balls in all categories. The results were profound the Nike platinum was the softest ball out of all of them it also spun the most. The taylormade tpi black ball went the farthest even farther than callaway hx   hot or pinnacle distance type balls. The nxt variety came in second in terms of carry. The actual distance balls may go farther in hot weather because they had more roll but surprisingly the pro vi taylormade srixon etc had more carry or as much as the super distance balls. The reason their better player preferred is the fact that they spin more around the green

and because they spin more it possible to work the ball a bit more compared to dunlop or pinnacle. So in conclusion the most expensive balls carry farther than the distance balls but the distance balls roll more and spin less but their soft cover makes them still feel OK. The only exception is the Nike platinum it is retro in terms of carry and roll yet has the most playability spin and ball flight control.

  5. Ok to understand why the ProV1 is superior to other balls you must know that all golf balls are not created equal. Like golf clubs there are different kinds of golf balls. Some have hard cores and are made for distance. These are most cheap balls and the ProV1X. Then there are the other golf balls. They are soft and are usally only one core. Duel core golf balls are harder and are made for distance. While soft core balls are made for green side controll and feel. AKA spinning your chips and feel off the putter and clubs. Harder balls also spin less so you wont slice or hook them as much or as far as you would with a soft ball. The other soft balls include Nike plat, Taylormade tp red, Callaway HX tour 56, and others

  6. I ran into this quandry last season and discovered the Top Flite D2 series.  I was playing in a 4 man scramble and dropped one in the drink.  One of my teammates handed me this ball (hole 3) and I played it for the rest of the day.  They are only around a dollar a ball (or less depending on where you buy - Golf Galaxy sells them for $13 for 15) and they perform on a level that is very close to the Titleist, at least for someone with a mid-handicap.  I'm an 18 right now but improving and alot of that improvement comes with the fact that I now use a ball that I can control around the green.

They also have a new ball based on the D2 design in a 3 piece form for around $20 that is supposed to be on even keel with the Pro V1.

  7. It really depends what kind of player you are, how you attack the ball. Personally, i think the pro vs aren't the best balls out on the market. The New Nike One Black and Platinum feature the newest technology, the power transfer layer which incoperates forgiveness into a tour quality golf ball and it is ten dollars cheaper per dozen than the pro vs. Or choose the callaway HX Tour and HX Tour 56, both have the performance of a pro v golf ball, but at a chaper price. The new golf digest had a list of information about all the newest golf balls and what the advantages and disadvantages were of each golf ball.

The best bang for your buck is the new taylormade burner golf ball, try it, you'll like it and pick up a golf digest check it out, it won a medal.

  8. That is a complicated question that can't be answered by us answerers for any number of reasons including what kind of a golfer are you.

This month's (February) Golf Magazine has an incredibly useful article on "The Best Ball for You!". It takes in consideration distance, spin, feel, cost, the golfer's ability, etc. IT'S A MUST READ. Please spend the money, chose a ball and don't look back. You CAN save money.

    Enjoy!

Golly Matt, one man's top drawer ball is another man's dud. And if you are improving with a certain ball, that's great, but do you really think it's the ball and how do you know there aren't better suted ones?

OK, here goes, since you really want something specific:

If you are a 15 to 20 handicap, Golf Magazine says: Acushnet NXT, DT Carry, DT Roll, Platinum Feel, Brigestone e6+, Callaway Tour ix or HX Hot Bite, Nike One Black or PD series, Noodle, REcept iQ 180, Srixon Trispeed oe Soft Feel, Taylormade Burner, Top Flite D2 series and Wilson ProStaff Boost.

Other balls folks have been writing to you about are tested to be better suited to scratch to 10 handicap players due to spin characteristics mainly. Hey, buy the magazine, it's a good issue.

  9. There really isn't any ball better. You might try the Nike One Platnium, but it doesn't spin as much and is overrated because Tiger uses it.

  10. Check out the Bridgestone e5+ and e6+. Since you're talking about feel and spin, the e6+ is most likely what you're looking for. Also, Titleist lost a lawsuit to Bridgestone specifically for the technology used in these balls (seamless covers) so from a 'feel' performance standpoint the Pro V1s and these Bridgestones are neck in neck.

Another one you will want to consider is the Top Flite D2 Feel. Definitely easier on the pocket, and their new products are dispelling their 'Rock Flite' reputation of the past.

  11. I have been playing for three years now and shoot in the low 80's. I have used all kinds of balls and I agree the ProV1 are big bucks. Try Bridgestone, they are soft and have excellent feel around the greens.

    Tom

  12. Srixon zur-c for Prov1 and zur-s for v1* they were designed as direct competition and are awesome, and cheaper.

  13. Nike One Platinum-they are very good as well, but still quite expensive.  Try going with the Titleist NXT series of balls.  They are actually pretty good and a great deal for the money.

  14. The alltime best golf ball is the Bridgestone B330-S

I'm a 2 handicap and it is by far my favorate ball

  15. Most golf ball manufacturers have a premium top of the line ball that is pretty close to the ProV1, but they aren't much cheaper.  Bridgestone B330, Nike Platinum, Calloway HX Tour are all really good, but about the same price as Titleist.  One of the best I have found for both distance and soft feel (believe it or not) are the Pinnacle Extreme (blue box, and blue markings on the ball).  They really fly well (at least for my swing speed etc), have a soft feel, and are about 1/2 the price of premium golf balls.  I also recommend Titleist NXT Tour which is just one step down from ProVs.

  16. simply put, dont bother with the high end balls until you get your game in the low 80's.  untill then try the bridgestone E5 or E6 balls. about 25 bucks a dozen. Bridgestone is gonna be the next big thing in golf, and you can say you were with them from the begining

  17. Callaway's Tour i and ix ,Nike one black.Nike One Platinum, Bridgestone Tour B330-s Srixon Z-Urc And the Taylormade TP red and black are comparable with the Titleist Pro v1. For more Info Check out Golf Magazines Feb 2008 edition. Its got a whole article on Golf balls...
