Given the recent invasion by the less than serious people from the rock section allow me to suggest that you just use the word music.

So, a serious answer is that music before attempting anything either to relax you (kind of like hypnosis) or to energize you has been studied and has shown mixed results. It seems to help some people and not others. This research has not yet been broken down into personality traits which I suspect may be the key to who it helps and doesn't.

However, while actually attempting something like ESP than music would give you both patterns and sensory input (sound) to focus on and this has been shown to drown out (and thus weaken) any impressions from ESP.

The Ganzfeld (link below) which uses white noise (static) and an even vision field (white ping pong balls over the eyes and a red light shined on your face) in order to not give a person any input to confuse with ESP impressions.

Also, most Ganzfeld experiments are done with visual targets (pictures) because most people process most of their information visually. A few studies have been done with auditory targets (music clips) but they had less positive results. However. this has not yet been tried with people who are primarily auditory learners (they learn through hearing best).
