The Dred Scott decision among others started the hostilities.  

Ft. Sumter was the first military action.

The attack on Ft. Sumpter. It's in the port of Charleston North Carolina. No one died, but the South got a large amount  of gun powder. The real takeover of the fort occurred after Lincoln sent a steamer to resupply the fort.
