Let's say I have a work permit, and a drivers' license and a Social Security card already...what things will the Green Card allow me to do that I couldn't with the work permit? (other than apply for citizenship)

  1. A green card allows you to stay in the USA with no restrictions of a visa. If you are not on a green card or a US citizen then you have to be on a visa of some description, otherwise you are classed as illegal. And therefore have no right to live or work in the USA.

If you are on a visa, each visa has a limited life span, for example a H visa allows a person to stay a maximum of six years then they must leave the USA, unless they have applied for adjustment in status (green card).

  2. Travel outside the U.S.   Right now you are a prisoner of the United States.
