  1. ACs no longer use freon, haven't for a number of years.

Refrigerators, any thing that had a cooling capability used freon in the past.

  2. First, I'd like to mention that Freon is a DuPont Company trade name for their chlorofluorocarbon and hydro-chlorofluorocarbon, (CFC and HCFC) refrigerant products. Most refrigerants are classified using an "R" designation such as R-12, R-22, etc..

There are many different types of refrigerants, and they are used in a wide variety of applications besides the ones most people are familiar with - refrigeration and air conditioning.

Refrigerants are used in the electronics industry in a variety of ways from cooling, semiconductor fabrication, and as a solvent for cleaning circuit boards of flux and contaminants.

There are industrial chemical processes that utilize refrigerants as well, but I'm not familiar with the specifics of their use in this way.

You can find a lot of information on these, and other uses for refrigerants with a Yahoo search. You will have more success if you use "refrigerant" rather than DuPont's trade name, "Freon" as part of your search terms.
