  1. Final Cut Express or Pro is great for Mac. I have a mac and I have my own public access TV show. It's really easy to use FC not to mention smoother than using a clunky PC. Some people like Vegas, but I would never use it. The quality of a MAC will last too where as a PC is more prone to crash than a Mac is.

  2. An Apple Macintosh is a hardware platform that can run MacOSX from Apple. MacOSX is the graphical User Interface (GUI) on top of a Unix-variant (BSD) operating system. When the hardware is running MacOSX, you get all the advantages of being in the MacOSX environment.

FinalCutPro2 is excellent video editing software - it can be expensive - but it is very powerful and has a steep learning curve like any video editor (including those running under other operating systems). New Macs also come bundled with iMovieHD - and for "free" it can do lots of stuff. If you want to run MS Office, go ahead:

Personally, I find the open source (free) NeoOffice fully compatible with pretty much all the Windows Office documents from Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Using BootCamp or similar application, the Macintosh computer hardware can boot Windows (XP, Vista) - which means it is a Windows machine and all the MacOSX attributes are gone - and the machine is just like any other Windows machine... which means it will run the applications you need - like any other Windows machine.

I used to be an IT manager. My department was responsible for 500 Macs and 500 Windows machines, all the interoffice connections between 13 offices in the state, remote access, internet access and security, printers, email... everything. I left that job. I have 1 Windows computer my current employer makes me use... and I spend my hard earned money on Apple Macintoshes running MacOSX for the home... at the moment, there are 4 Macs in the household. The Windows machine and the Macs all share the same Ethernet LAN and we trade files as needed... and we share the internet connection.

In my mind, this makes the Macintosh hardware much more flexible than a traditional Windows machine... But I don't run Windows on the Macs - there is no need to... that is just a waste of an awesome operating system and hardware system with Mac OSX...

  3. Compare what you can do with a mac and with a pc.

It used to be that Macs were the computers for graphic artists and students. That has since changed. I have used both Macs and PCs and both are equally powerful in terms of multimedia processing.

I have used both Macs and PC's in editing both video and photographic media and have not experienced a drastic difference between the two.

However, between the two, PC's still hold the edge for flexibility of software and hardware and this is a big plus for the PC.

System crashes are not unique to PC's as others imply. I have used a PC my entire life and have not experienced crashes. Crashes are caused by poorly written third party software (which there are alot of for PC's) and not by the Operating System on its own.

Others may raise concern about the Security of your data on a PC given that there are many viruses, trojans and Adware/Spyware out there. I have used a PC running only Vista firewall and no Antivirus and have not gotten infected for the past year or two. The very first line of security for your PC is you. If you are careless about what emails you open, what sites you go to and what pop ups you click, you will inevitably get infected by malicious software of some kind. Knowledge on what and what not to do is the first line of defense -- and the best.

Also, there are Mac viruses out there. Macs are not completely free of these problems.

Of course running anti-virus software and spyware protection is always a very good thing to do since we as users could make mistakes in handling our PC security.

    Regarding your software concerns:

I have used Sony Vegas 8 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and both software do an excellent job at video editing. Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 is (from what I gather) similar to Final Cut Pro (the leading Mac video editing software). The difference is that Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 can run in both Macs and PCs.

Currently I use Sony Vegas 8 because I do not have enough computing power (being that I only have a laptop) and it does the job of editing and cutting footage very well. Although less beautiful than Premiere or Final Cut Pro, its user interface is simpler to use and more intuitive.  For me, being a hobbyist of sorts, it has more features than I could ever use.

My recommendation: Use a PC. You get everything a Mac can do, plus more flexibility in software and hardware. If you are careful and do a little research, your likelihood for crashes and security breeches drop drastically.

In the end, its about what you can afford, what you will grow with and what you will learn to use well. Like everything, the computer is a tool -- it wont make you better, you have to get better at it.

    Regarding your concerns:

Both Mac's and PC's are equally capable of having nice interface styles and the keyboard is all up to personal preference. (Personally, although Macbook keyboards work great, Mac desktop keyboards are horrible).

I hope I answered your question. It may sound that I am biased to the PC but I am not. I have used both and love both platforms and view both of them as great operating systems. Oh and dont listen to advertising hype, research for yourself.
