Question:

What bike should I get for my first motorcycle if I drive a lot on the highway?

I'm going to be getting a motorcycle in the next week and I would like to know which bike would be the best for me to get. I have to drive on the highway and the speed limit is 65 and a lot of the people go atleast 70-75 so I just want to make sure that the bike would be able to handle that. I haven't had a bike before so I would like to get something that looks nice and is both beginner friendly and can still hold it's own. Thanks!

  1. Yamaha FZ6

    Suzuki SV650

    Kawasaki 650 Ninja, or Verseys

all bikes are excellent beginner bikes, they offer a normal upright seating position, aerodynamic with fairing and a windshield to slice thru the wind and keeping most of the wind off the rider, easy and comfortable to ride, excellent speed and acceleration, reliable and very fuel efficient

  2. suzuki sv650 perfect for you good preformance and looks

  3. I like the small, lightweight, nimble, fuel-saving, yet fast, good-looking Ninja 250.

I cruise at 70-75 all of the time.

Right now is now a good time to find a good used motorcycle at a great price... wrong time of year, but a used bike is what you need if this is your first.

If you buy this bike from a dealer - DO NOT GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTY - you don't need it on this bike, and if you find this one with the additional warranty paid for, check into canceling it and getting some money back, I did!

Remember - the day you buy the bike is the day you need to have all of your protective gear in hand.  Helmet, gloves, proper footgear, protective jacket & pants.  It only takes one fall to wish that you were wearing them that day, so don't ride without proper gear.  (I've replaced two helmets so far and it wasn't because they got old.)

Get some instructions from someone experienced on how to ride, then take the Safety Course!

Check out the website I've noted here, there's a lot of good info there.  And by the way, you do not have to spend a fortune on a helmet. Check out the video noted below for the Scorpion 400 and get the additional dark smoke visor, it's great!

Be safe and "let the good times roll".

  4. Look to a kawasaki Ninja 250cc.

  5. Yamaha yzf600 would be good for highway and freeway driving while not being too incredibly zippy so you kill yourself.  the kawi zzr600 would be good too.  What kind of experience do you have with bikes?  If you've never ridden a bike in your life my recommendations are a bad idea.  But if you know how to ride and can be responsible and not a maniac then one of these bikes would be good and you wont get bored after a couple weeks.

  6. I'd agree, 450 to 650ccs. 750 would be okay.  Make sure you can sit on the bike with both feet flat on the ground.  Take the MSF course or at least learn to ride the bike in a quiet neighborhood with not much traffic, at least until you have the controls sorted out and you don't have to think 'Okay, now which of these gizmos is the clutch and which is the turn signals.'

The freeway is safer because everyone's going in the same direction and nobody is turning left in front of you without looking or backing out of a driveway without looking.  But what accidents do happen have more severe consequences.  You need to learn to stay out of the cars' way, to -expect- them not to see you and to pull into your lane.  Its paranoia that saves your life.

And these days there are so many newbies getting on bikes. I expect to see stories on Yahoo soon about a mysterious rise in bike accidents.  You might watch out for them too!

  7. i would go with atleast a 250 4 stroke and maybe a 200 2 stroke but if i was you i would get the cfr450 its a honda

  8. do you have a full licence or are you on learner plates

  9. In a perfect world you would start out on a mini bike or a small dirt bike and work your way up to larger bikes. I wish all motorcycle riders could start out that way but not everyone is as lucky or as fanatical about motorcycles as I am.

Since you are hitting the highway right away I don't think I would get anything smaller than a 600 or 650. If you are buying a new bike go out to the bike shops and sit on the bikes that interest you. See how they fit , how they feel to you and price them. You can't lose with any of today's modern Japanese bikes. Ask questions about the bikes you are looking at. Talk to other riders you see coming into the shops to kick tires and get some opinions from them.  If you want to ride a modern classic take a look at the Harley Sportster 883. They're a great starter bike and a great go anywhere do anything bike and they are the best deal out there and it's a bike that can grow with you.

Buy a good helmet, jacket, gloves and riding boots. And take an MFS riding course.

Take your time picking a bike and have fun looking. And please be careful out there and Good Luck.
