Pool is the common name for pocket billiards.  The word "pool" itself is a gambling term.  A pool is a collective bet.  Long ago, horse racing tracks would have gambling rooms called pool rooms.  To help pass the time, they installed pocket billiard tables.  The game of pocket billiards just became associated with pool rooms and eventually, the game itself became known as pool.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
