Question:

What binds 2 people into a relationship of real husband and wife in Islam?

I was just wondering if there is a specific "Aayah" or a "Dua'a" to ACTUALLY bond a man and woman in the relationship of a husband a wife!

All I know is that they read some verses from the Quran and 2 witnesses from each side are to be present there and they have to sign on a paper and they take oath and agreement from both the bride and the groom!

But, this can be done by Christians too, except this that they might read verses from the altered Bible! But there must be something for Muslims to islamically bond them into this relationship! Otherwise, anyone can start being a so-called husband a wife without a particular Islamic procedure!

No silly remarks please!

  1. Marriage is "mithaq" - a solemn covenant (agreement). It is not a matter which can be taken lightly. It should be entered into with total commitment and full knowledge of what it involves. It is not like buying a new dress where you can exchange it if you don't like it. Your partner should be your choice for life. One should be mature enough to understand the demands of marriage so that the union can be a lasting one. For a marriage to be valid certain conditions must be met.

    1) consent of both parties.

    2) " Mahr" a gift from the groom to his bride.

    3) Witnesses- 2 male or female.

    4) The marriage should be publicized, it should never be kept secret as it leads to suspicion and troubles within the community.

(The believers, males and females, are partners of one another; they shall jointly enjoin all that is good and counsel against all that is evil.) (At-Tawbah 9: 71)

  2. I think there is nothing more binding than Fear of Allah and knowledge and commitment to one's obligations and responsibilities to the spouse.

  3. What bind them as husband and wife is the akad, a promise to be each other's partner. And their akad will be witnessed by an imam and a few guys to testify later if anything should come up.

  4. Just the inherent servitude and subjugation of women found in the q'uran.

  5. 'Christians are less likely to beat up their wives'?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?

  6. The willingness of a man and female to marry each other in the presence of witnesses and agreeing on meher is the real bondage which bring them in arelationship of husband and wife. The reading of some verses are the sunnah.
