Sadly since the arrival of Captain Cook, some 90% of all bird species in the Hawaii Island chain have been wiped out.

The second link below, from National Geographic, even goes into detail how far ranging the efforts are to save the remaining 10%!

The third link is a great guide to the specific birds that love to hang out on Maui.  I like the Red Crested Cardinal, but think the Ruddy Shellduck is a real charmer! LOL
