What boat shape will be faster with the same motor?

i have a 16 ft flat bottom jon boat, and a 12 ft semi v bottom. both are the same width. its going to be pwered by a 3.5 johnson

  1. Either way you wont be movin very fast with a 3.5hp!! lol But to go a little quicker would be the v hull.


  2. Probably something that looks like a river barge, LOL!!!

    The "V" bottom should be slightly faster due to the way it moves the water out of the way. The flat bottom front-ends generally try to push water under the boat and not to the sides.

  3. you don't have enough power to lift the semiV out of the water into planing mode.  In displacement mode, energy is wasted pushing the bow wave out in front of you.

    you *might* be able to plane the flatbottom jonboat, with a light enough load.
