  1. You got some good suggestions so far.  Other good ones:

-- The Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander (starts with the Black Cauldron); The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings; Holes; From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler; The Phantom Tollbooth; Bridge to Teribithia; A Dog Called Kitty

just what comes immediately to mind.  In your library or bookstore, look for Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook, with literally hundreds of other good suggestions.

edit -- to those who say don't read to kids who can read to themselves (obviously not you, since you're asking for read-alouds), i say why on earth not both? my 8-year-old is reading at a sixth grade level and reads great, challenging books to herself for at least a half hour a day.  i spend another half hour reading to her ... often reading books above a sixth grade level that she can understand when i read them but isn't ready for on her own.  even if it's something she could read on her own, it's just fun to be read to! it's like listening to the radio or watching tv, but more imaginative.  and we've had great discussions from reading together that we'd never have had had she been reading alone.

  2. well when i was little i used to read with my mom.  i think you sjould read the junie b. jones book and like you read  one page and she reads one page and yall go back and forth, that is only if they is one of yall tho

  3. There are so many wonderful books to read to 10 yr. olds.

Check with your local book stores and library.  They can

recommend books sutiable for that age group.  " The Thief

Lord "  by Cornelia Funk and books about " Charlie Bone"

by Jenny Nimmo are two favorites that my grandson and I

read together when he was 10.

  4. Harry Potter

  5. he should be getting a reading book from school that you can read to him.

if not, then my sons favoutite is The BFG by Roald Dahl

Also the Captain Underpans stories are fantastic-gross (about bogeys, farts etc) but is on the national curriculum, and as long as it encourages them to read, i dont mind.

    Also, Harry Potter etc.

For girls, i have no idea, as i have 2 boys, but maybe the Jacqueline Wilson stories (she did Tracy Beaker, amonst others).

  6. green eggs and ham!!! I wish my parents still read it to me.

  7. the magic faraway tree by Enid Blyton or her Famous five or Secret seven series

  8. None, 10 year olds can read a book all by themselfs in their own room in their own bed.

  9. Bud Not Buddy

its very good a newbreeie honar

  10. There's a lot of good books listed in the answers.

I agree with part of what one poster said about reading none to them because they are old enough to read themselves.  I just don't agree with the part about them reading by themselves in their room.  Me and my daughter read the books together.  She reads a paragraph and then I will read one.

  11. mayb nancy drew r hardy boy's or theres a GREAT book that i read yesterday it's called Esperanza Rising and the reading level is 5 th grade or mayb u could try chasing vermeer and the sequel The Wright 3 or another art mystery book is The Mysterious Edge of the Heroic World. that book was good and so were the others

  12. My 8 year old grandson says you should try Goosebumps.  He says that children also like to learn so you should read him non- fiction and Judy B Jones, and Magic Tree house books.

  13. Spiderwick

The books are great and really get your imagination going.

  14. "Because of Winn-Dixie." This is a heart warming book, great for 10yr olds! This is a MUST read book.

    Happy reading :)

  15. Mum use to read the Roald Dahl books to us when we were kids.

    Favourites were

    The Twits

    The BFG

    James and the Giant Peach.

    Fantastic Mr Fox

As we got older we would read them to her. Very funny books. Shortish chapters so it's easy to stop for the night.

I plan on starting them next year with my son.

  16. Is it a short book that you are reading to a whole classsroom or just to your own kids?
