  1. Here's a few:

    Where the Red Fern Grows

    Hatchett

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane (the best ever)

    Holes

    Frindle

    Bridge to Terabithia

    Poppy

  2. Catcher in the Rye, Moby d**k, Of Mice and Men would be some good classic fare.  A lot depends on how much time you have to spend reading.

  3. Nothing's Fair in Fifth Grade

    http://www.amazon.com/Nothings-Fifth-Gra...

  4. Don Quixote

  5. Hello,

Im not a teacher, but I homeschool my son, & last year while he was in the 5th grade, the books we read were "series" books, heres a list of them, my son just loved them, & was ever so happy to "oral" book reports about them too.

Heres the list in the order to be read.

    Tales of fourth grade Nothing

    Superfudge

    Doublefudge

    Fudge Mania

    These are by Judy Blume

    The next series is

    Indian In the Cuboard

    Return of the Indian

    The Secret of the Indian

    The Mystery of the Cupbaord

    The Key To the Indian

all these are by Lynne Reid Banks

    hope this helps you out.

Also if your students want to lear about the childhood of Famous Americans

theres a series of books called "Childhood of Famous Americans, & they have so many diffrent people thats made hsitroy, the presidents, there wives, including the story of "Walt Disney".

I recommended that book only because my son just loves Buzzligth YEar, so I figured what better person to learn about, then the creator of it all Walt Disney himself.

Good luck with what you chose.

  6. 1.  How to be a Perfect person in Just Three days.  (I can't remember who wrote it, but it is just a nice reminder that no one is perfect and it is best just to be yourself.)

School librarians can be a great resource as well, not only can they recommend a good "read aloud", because not all books are... They can make sure it is available to you.  (and generally they love it when they can share books that are new to the library.  I would look for one that emphasizes team work or positive self esteem.

  7. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  8. Any novel by Roald Dahl, Bridge to Terabithia, Holes, James and the Giant Peach.

  9. picture book: "A Fine Fine School"; By: Sharon Creech

chapter book: "The City of Ember" By: Jeanne DuPrau

those are two books my teachers read to me when i was in fifth grade. (:

  10. Since it's election year I'm going to read the kid who ran for president I can't remember the author (but it's funny), other favorites I have are Crash by Jerry Spinelli, and Frindle, by Andrew Clements.

Edit for the answer below how to be a perfect person in just three days was written by Stephen Manes.

  11. I would absolutely read There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom by Louis Sachar.  It is hilarious, it attracts the attention of both boys and girls, and is about a struggling 5th grade student working to succeed.  Very realistic and easy to relate to.

As for other chapter books for beginning of the year 5th grade...

    * The Landry News by Andrew Clements

    * A Week In the Woods by Andrew Clements (about 5th grade camp!)

    *  How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell

    *  The Kid Who Ran for President by Dan Gutman

    *  America's Most Wanted Fifth Grader by Jan Lawrence and Linda Raskin

Picture Books are still also very usable in 5th grade:

    Mr. Peabody's Apples by Madonna

Nothing Ever Happens On 90th Street by Roni Schotter

Salt in his Shoes by Deloris Jordan

The Sweetest Fig by Chris Van Allsburg

    Say Something by Peggy Moss

    Have fun!
