  1. Hoarding is a facet of the compulsion side of OCD.

  3. Hoarding is much more common than people think and many people are surprised to discover that they have a tendency to hoard.

This self-help book available from Amazon is a great tool to deal with this emotional disability.

Overcoming Compulsive Hoarding: Why You Save & How You Can Stop (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook) (Paperback)

  4. Time Magazine just did an article on how to live with 100 things, about people who are trying to narrow down there possessions to 100 things.  Obviously it doesn't happen very often but its an interesting concept.  One thing you could do is make a goal to make your living space functional and efficient.  If you haven't used it in more then a year, and it doesn't have extreme sentimental value, get rid of it.  I love going through my things and getting rid of stuff just so I can see the finished, organized area.  Another idea is that you don't need to stop bringing things into your house, you just need to find something else to get rid of whenever you do.  If you buy 3 shirts, find 3 shirts to get rid of.  Identify what of your belongings helps you with the person you are today and streamline your possesions to help that person.  It will never help you to be bogged down with "stuff"
