Question:

What books do you read in AP Literature and Composition?

Does it vary by school? Or is there a set standard list for all high schools. I will be taking this class as well as several other AP and accelerated classes next year. My main concern is, I need to work 20-30 hours per week during the school year in addition to completely the homework. I really need to get into a good college and hopefully, find some scholarships.

So, what books do you read? If it varies, please list examples or what books you read at your school. Also, how many books did you read, and how long did you have to read them? Were you able to read at your own pace, or did you have to read specific chapters every night to prepare for class the next day?

Thanks in advanced! I will choose best answer!

  1. It definitely varies by school and often by teacher as well.  Some of the books that I read for my AP Lit class as a senior in high school were The Chosen by Chaim Potok, The Promise (its sequel), East of Eden by John Steinbeck, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad...and there were some plays and short stories mixed in there as well.  We were not allowed to read them at our own pace; we were either given specific chapters to read every night or given a deadline to complete a whole section of the book.  We didn't have a reading assigment every single night, but when we did, it was about thirty pages a night (maybe about two out of every three nights).  So AP Lit can be a lot of work, but ultimately, it depends on your teacher (my teacher was about medium, I think, in the amount of time you had to put in outside of class), and it depends on how fast a reader you are.
