Question:

What bottle nipples do I need to use with cereal in the formula?

I want to try giving my son just a little bit of cereal in his bottle because he eats through formula like crazy. What type of nipple will work best? I have evenflo bottles, with level 1 & 2 nipples and neither one of them seem to allow much cereal through before getting clogged. I seem to think that back in the day there was such a thing as cereal nipples that had a + shape opening. Any suggestions?

  1. NONE.....best to use a spoon!   The nipples are just for lazy people.

  2. This is now generally considered a choking hazard. I would recommend askdrsears.com for baby medical questions. They plus kellymom.com have good info on starting infant feeding.

  3. "Any suggestions? " Yeah, You SHOULD NOT put cereal in a bottle!!!  Your son isn't even a month old!!  If you feel he is eating too much formula (which I highly doubt) you need to talk to his doctor.

You could do some serious damage by feeding him solids this early.

    See:  http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/solids...

It shows  PLENTY of research saying how bad it can be.

Ah...McMom had the site I was looking for....make sure you read it!!!

  4. I hope you're not asking for a newborn........ please don't give cereal to a baby younger than 4-5 months... even then, it's better to give cereal with a spoon and not in a bottle.

  5. Just do the little hole bigger, that's what I used to do with my babies' bottle nipples. Don't make it too big though or he would choke with too much cereal.

  6. You're not supposed to put cereal in the formula

  7. Sheesh...

"5 Reasons NOT to Put Cereal in Your Baby's Bottle

    #1. You can cause your child's allergies. . .

While no one agrees completely on what it is that actually causes allergies, we do have enough research to see certain connections. One, very well documented connection to serious allergies is when a baby has been exposed to the allergen too early. Putting cereal in your baby's bottle, even rice cereal, can cause allergies.

    #2. Choking hazard

Some infants do not fully have their swallowing reflex fully developed at birth. Sucking cereal from a bottle can cause a choking hazard. . .and babies have actually died this way. Choking on cereal from a bottle certainly isn't a common cause of death. . .but why do it when it is linked to something like choking?

    #3. Digestive Issues

There is a connection between babies who have solids too early and digestive problems. The fact of the matter is that baby tummies are designed to take in breastmilk. When you can't breastfeed, there's formula which mimics breastmilk. Baby tummies are not designed to take in solids, and it's not surprising that they malfunction when forced to do what they're not designed to do.

    #4. Obesity

One key factor in obesity is infant feeding. Infants are born with a self regulatory ability to take in only what they need. By feeding on demand and following a baby's cues, you are essentially helping them form habits of eating when hungry and eating until they feel full. This sets them up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. But when you add cereal to a bottle, it bypasses their system and essentially they take in more calories than they need.

    #5. It Doesn't Work!!!

There is no scientific evidence to support the notion that baby's sleep better with cereal in their bottles. The truth is, babies are designed to wake frequently at night. Dealing with sleep deprivation is part of the parenting package."

  8. We used the "Y" cut nipples when my daughter was little.  Those work great!  Check to see if Evenflo sells them.

  9. You're not supposed to put cereal in bottles. It's a choking hazard.

  10. Just take a razor and enlarge the hole on the bottles you already have.  Experiment..if the baby gags..too big a hole.  Make a smaller one.  Save yourself some money...reuse what you have to work with..HUGS!!

  11. Avent size 2 & 3

but i recommend giving cereal in spoon.
