I've heard of the brand Garmin - would you recommend it? My budget is around $1000 (EUR 600). I'd like a GPS that I can also use while I'm abroad, but has good local maps (I live in Malta, EU).

Thanks :)

  1. i suggest

Garmin nüvi 660 4.3-Inch Widescreen Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator

    Price : $299.99

    reference : http://astore.amazon.com/hot-new-release...

  2. If you have a 3G phone without a build in GPS Module, just buy a GPS package, including a software  for your mobile phone, and a external battery pack.

Contact your local mobile phone dealer or your mobile phone network ISP.

If your phone already has a GPS Module build in, you can ask the tech-guy to help you turn it on.

ps. $1000 can buy a new 3G phone with GPS build in :)

    Nokia Wireless GPS Module LD-1W

    Motorola Smartphone-Based Navigation System T815

  3. The GARMIN Nuvi Series are quite good, the 600 series are extremely complete but the 300 series are more than convenient and can even fit in a large pocket.

Ideally you should go check them out for size as they vary from one model to the other and some of them may be too big for you.

One other alternative if you have a GPS enabled phone/pocket PC (e.g. HTC, HP-Ipaq, etc... ) which uses Windows Mobile (WM) is to get TOMTOM Navigator 6 with all the necessary maps. As long as your device can support at least a 2GB memory card then it should work fine.

I have an HTC P3600 and a Holux1200 GPS bluetooth receiver which I use with TomTom Navigator 6 with the maps of Western Europe and I've used it in the UK, Spain, France, Italy and Germany. It works perfect and comes loaded with Traffic Camera information.

    Hope this helps
