What brand/model of camcorder is the best?

I'm interested in getting a camcorder but I don't know which is best. I would like something no more than $500, but something that will also last long....any suggestions?!

There are a few good ones in your price range from Sony, Canon, Panasonic and JVC - each has advantages, so it depends what video you will be getting and how you plan to edit the video... but PLEASE do not get a DVD based camcorder - their video quality is terrible.

JVC has some of the best ones i have one from Wal-Mart i paid i think it was like $230 i cant remember what it was but they have cheaper ones there.
