Most British bread tastes sugary to me. I hate it, American bread is even worse. Which brand has the least sugar?

  1. If you don't like the flavor of commercial breads, get a bread machine and make your own. Basic recipe for making bread in a bread machine

    1 cup warm water

    2 tablespoons butter or margarine

    3 cups flour

    2 teaspoons sugar

    1 teaspoon salt

2 1/2 teaspoons dry yeast or 1 packet

Most bread machines you load from liquids to yeast. You must use the sugar to help the yeast to work. This is the minimal amount in this recipe. You must use salt to control the yeast, this is the minimal amount.

This recipe is baked at 1 pound loaf, any darkness setting you like.

It can be altered to be 1 cup white flour 2 cups whole wheat if you like.

  2. You can actually buy sugar-free breads (the labels will say).  I've checked labels because my husband is diabetic, and the cheapest white breads usually have the fewest carbs and sugars (weird, but true)

  3. Try the health food store in the frozen section. I used to buy Ezekiel bread years ago when I was going sugar free. It's a sprouted grain bread and really healthy, Here's a link to check it out. Good luck!
