Okay, so we know that the economy is all screwy these days. Does anyone have recomondations for cheap, good-quality brands? If so, how much does a fifty pound bag cost? Does anyone use Prairie Acres?

  1. i would use praire acres

  2. it is nearly impossible to find anything cheap that is good quility.since no body on here knows your horse personally we cant proplery reccommend anything for him.call an equine nutritionist or consult your vet.

  3. Strategy is great, I use it for all of my horses but lactating mares. It is easily digestible and does not put on fat. It can go anywhere from 10 - 16 per 50 pound bag depending on where you get it (ie feed store in horse country vs. feed store in the city). It works for all my horses (even the donkey that only really needs hay) They are all about the same weight for their size on strategy, make sure, as with any processed feed,  you give plenty of hay. Mine get alfalfa as well, you think they'd be crazy hyper but they barely get worked and do great.

  4. Grain is a luxury for my guys.

They get enough hay 2x/day to keep them satisfied, and I forgo the grain.

Horses really don't need it unless they are strenuously working, and I am talking strenuous, not what most of us here on the board use them for.

If finances is an issue, cut the grain etc...

  5. well we dont know what your horse likes
