  1. Ethanol is an oxygenate required by the Clean Air Act to reduce smog and pollution in metro areas determined to be in PADD zones.  This gasoline is called RFG (reformulated gasoline).   If you live in one of these areas, you can't get away from ethanol, because it's not a brand issue, it's a regulation issue.  If you're near the edge of the zone, you can drive out of the PADD zone and buy gasoline, but keep in mind, your call will have higher emissions.

There used to be another oxygenate called MTBE, but its use was stopped because of concerns over water contamination.  Ethanol helps your car's engine run cleaner.  There aren't any major downsides to RFG.

  2. there is ethnol in all the gas in the U.S now.

  3. Stations in the US that are in an urban area are required to have 10% ethanol.

  4. I'm pretty sure in the US they all do now.  They say it's to ease the dependence on foreign oil but everyone gets less gas mileage with it so how does that work out?
