Alright, I just started golfing so I need to purchase a set of clubs. However, I have no idea what brands are good - I don't even know what brands are out there.

I'm not looking for a top notch $2000 set or whatever, but I would like to know what brands are known to be good. I don't want to purchase some dirt cheap off brand ones that break. I want the most bang for my buck.

Thanks

  1. I play Mizuno MX-25's, they are a great feeling club.  I also tried the Callaway X-18's when I was making my decision last summer.  They also felt good, but I liked the control I had with the Mizuno's better.

If you are looking for a used set, I would look for either one of those 2 or go with a Cleveland or Titleist.  Taylor Made RAC's aren't bad either.

The main thing is to get a cavity back so that it's more forgiving, once you get better you can think about blades.  I've been playing for 18 years and I still use cavity backs.

  2. The top manufacturers offer several models at different price points.  The top ones are Taylormade, Calloway, Ping, Titleist, Cleveland, Cobra,  Mizuno and Adams.  I just bought a new set of irons, and they are from a top brand and only cost $500.  I could've spent twice that much (I did for the set I used previous), but these felt the best and gave me the ball flight I was looking for.  As a beginner you won't know too much about how they should feel so I might recommend looking at used sets where you could get a top brand for a lot less than new clubs.

  3. Whatever brand you choose, you need to go to EBay. You can get great deals. Most clubs are demos, but that just means they've been hit a few times off of a mat.

I bought a brand new set of Cobra 3100 i/h for $300. They were $595 at the local pro shop.  I also purchased a Cobra Speed LD Driver for $139. $300 in the store.

Just be sure you know what you want. Deals like that usually don't allow returns.

  4. Most medium to large size cities have golf club repair shops. Contact them and see what they have used. They will also be able to fit the clubs to your strength and height. Do not buy new. All brand names are about the same and one is not going to be better for you vs another. How they fit you is the primary benifit.

    PGA Tour caddy.

  5. i prefer callaway, taylor made clevland and titelist. all great brands. if purchasing your first set find a golf shop that sells 2nd hand sets. you can usually find a set a couple years old and pay less than half of the new retail price. also have them sized and fit to you. This will cost you a couple bucks per club but worth every penny. when golf clubs are custom fit to you you will be more comfortable. good luck

  6. Titleist DCI irons are solid. You can get used sets in great condition on Craigslist or Ebay.
