Question:

What brands of sewing machines are best?

I love to sew but i do everything by hand so i want to buy a sewing machine but this is the first time i buy one so i need help.I want one within the range of $100-$200. I dont want a really fancy one but i want one with useful stiches i can use on a lot of stuff. thanks

    In your budget, I'd definitely suggest a good used machine.  Suggested reading:

    John Giordano: The Sewing Machine Book

    Carol Ahles: Fine Machine Sewing (first and last few chapters especially)

Singer and Brother are both good machines with lots of gadgetry for some fancy home stitching, but reliability is more a matter of price than brand.    $100 gets you very little machine, be prepared for closer to $200.  You'll find that good, reliable, versatile machines will run between $600 - $1,000, and those capable of computerized embroidery will even run a couple thousand dollars (Husqvarna).

  3. You might do some comparisons but I think Singer is the most reliable.
