  1. if your just learning, a wavestorm is good.  the boards i like are channel islands and lost

  2. When I was growin up in North Shore, Oahu. My dad gave me his 9 ft. Honolua surfboard. Since then, I have been purchasing Honolua surfboards all the time. It is a great long board surfboard because it is sturdy, it is comfortable when I paddle out, I they are long lasting. My favorite shortboard brand is Sector 9 or Lost. They make some nice boards for carving and for doing tricks on.

    Enjoy

  4. Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on.

You need a board that floats you well enough to take off (paddle and catch a wave). Although most people start off best on a longboard, I have seen lots of young surfers start right off on a shortboard, and master it in no time. No doubt a longer, more buoyant board is far better for beginners. In '66, I started on a 9'6", but that's what everybody was riding then.

But the real BEST answer isn't here, it's in a good local surf shop. The folks there surf on the same waves as you do (or will). They can best recommend a board for the local breaks, that match your size and skill level.

  5. id go with quicksilver!!

  6. i learned to surf on the 9'0 board here:

and still have it all these years later because it's a blast to ride in smaller surf.

for beginner and intermediate surfers, i usually recommend funshape or longboards (something around 8-9' and a little wider and thicker). at the surf school i teach at we use soft-top boards, but i never recommend a person buying one. for rentals and lessons they're fine, but they really are only good for picking up the fundamentals; in other words, they're not boards you can "grow" with.

  7. for a beginner it really doesn't make a difference you just want about 9-0 thick and wide or a foamy brands are just what the individual likes everybody is different every board is different good luck welcome to the grome club
