At some point, I would like to get a second dog to be pals with my Collie.

I am thinking that a Springer Spaniel might be a good choice.

What do you think?

What breeds would be a good match for my Collie?

Not for breeding, of course, just friends:)

  1. lol it could be any dog really I have a mini bulldog and a teacup yorkie and they get along GREAT its real funni

  2. I think a Collie would do pretty well with any well tempered dog... just not a fiesty/aggressive one-haha!

Is the collie a male or female? How old is it? That will affect how well they do with a new dog. They will probably fight for the dominant position regardless of male/female but it shouldn't get too out of control. Just monitor them for awhile together.

  3. well if you have a well adjusted Collie, I'd say you have some high energy, so a Springer would be a good choice. Keep in mind these 2 dogs are bred for completely different things. Both are high energy, but a Springer will want to do more and more and more. You will have 2 long haired dogs and both will require a fair amount of brushing and grooming. Be sure to really really research the lines of the Springer. It will depend on what you are going for. If you want a purebred, do you want a actual Field Bred Springer, which are more working dogs, gun dogs, and versatile. They also look very different than a show Springer. If you like their pretty, slim clean cut lines type of dog then you need to find a show Springer breeder. When looking for a purebred pup be sure to always ask about over aggression or Rage Syndrome in any of the lineage. If there is some or they don't feel like answering truthfully then don't buy from them. If you adopt a rescue Springer, its not likely they will know the background or the propensity of that particular dog to carry that. Be aware the Liver and Whites tend to have more skin ailments, than the Black and whites or Tri's. Good Luck I like Spaniels they are nice, bouncy loyal dogs. Beautiful too.

  4. Well, if you don't mind doing all that brushing, and having the springer professionally groomed fairly often, then it might work out okay.  Are you sure your collie wants to share you with another dog?

  5. If you like Springers maybe try a Brittany.  Their coat is much easier to care for and they have a similar disposition.  They love other dogs too.  We have 2 Brittany's and they are the best pals :o)

  6. Get a sheltie then you would have a cute pair.
