Question:

What breed of dog is best? Or should I get a cat?

I have a 5 month old son and am thinking of getting a dog sometime in the near future. I am not sure of the breed I should get. I have had various dogs over the years, and one of the best dogs I ever had was a Pit Bull. I am afraid of having such a dog around my boy. I want them to grow up together. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What age should my son be before I get a dog? What type of dog? BTW I live in a decent size apartment and have a very small yard. I have thought of getting a cat, but not sure how they do with kids....

  1. Cat`s are fine with kids, they scratch sometimes. German Shepherds.

  2. right, I would not advise a small dog because they can be very nippy.

I would not suggest a german shepherd because the excitement of a child can cause them to attack(this is why they use them as a police dog).

But i would advise something like a pit bull, staffy, Or american bulldog but MAKE SURE ITS YOUNG AND WELL TRAINED!. they are nicknamed the Nanny-dogs because they are great with children. Never leave a dog alone with a child though, that's just an attack waiting to happen.

your son could be any age but always teach him how to respect you dog.

I have 2 Staffies and they love children. I have grown up with my staffy and she loves my baby cousin too.

  3. i have a bichon frise and hes great! and very kind ..but mine gets really scared and pisssed when there is small chidren unless your boy is calm then it is ok i love my dog he is very payful!

a cat idk with a little boy cause again cats like someone very calm and easy going hmmm maybe a chihuahua or a pomeranian

  4. if you want a easy dog go with a labrador,

i have a black labrador and my mum said she had to be one of the easiest dogs to train, also they are very protective. Im 12 years old and my black lab makes sure im ok all the time!

  5. Bichon frise :D

they are hypoalergenic, and small :D

very protected but cute and cuddly at the same time :)

  6. irsh wolf hound though they dig there so kl or a husky

  7. you should get a cat because they are very lovable and friendly if you get the right kind. also they are very low matnance. with a dog u have to take them out to p**p which would not work best in an apartment and they need to run which would not work well with a small yard. also u have to train them. and that only works if u have a lot of time. you should really get a cat because they are quit too. they do good with kids too.

  8. The best breeds with children that I know of are labs, golden retrievers, and boxers.  They are very protective of your child and willing to please you.  For an apartment, I would recommend a boxer.  They need exercise, but not of the same amount that retrievers do.

Small dogs usually don't do as well with little kids, and cats would be far too impatient.

    Good luck!

  9. You should get a Yorkshire terrier their a really cute and small dog to have and would be ideal for your 5 month old son i wouldnt suggest having a large dog since you having a quite a young son, Or you could get a cat if you wish they dont take much looking after and they dont smell as much as what dogs do and with you having quite a small yard you probabley shouldnt get a dog as they need loads of room and space and their not really ideal to have in an appartment as it could bother your neighbours,

So get a kitten if i were with you

    good luck !

  10. I think a smaller dog would be a good idea on your behalf. Standard Poodles are always great family dogs, and I had one as a kid and he was great. We would always give him the "sporty" poodle look instead of more fo-fo, and he was an amazing athlete. Labs and Golden Retrievers are also great, but I'm not sure if they'd be too big and would shed too much for you. Be sure not to get a miniature dog, since they usually require a lot of attention, not good for families.

  11. Cats are amazing with kids.  Well Kittens anyways, older cats sometimes don't tolerate them as well unless they are used to it.  I would suggest a lab or maybe a german shepard.  We've had both and they are great dogs.  Stay away from the smaller breeds like toy poodles and chi's they aren't very patient and can be very nippy.  However I wouldn't get a puppy since your son is only five months old.  Here is a site that explains why:
