I would like to learn how to be a barrel racer but I want to know what breed of horse is best. What breed would be hardy enough for barrel racing? I was thinking about a Quarter Horse but I am not sure.

  1. Well you want a horse with a big rear end. The bigger the better. The cause for this would be more power to turn the barrels. Also look for a horse that is somewhat stout but not to short. Somewhere in the 15 hand range would be PERFECT.  I hope this helps.

  2. Quarter horse

  3. Definate Quarter Horse. They are the 'rodeo' horse. But stocky ponies are perfect, too. They are small yet bulked up and can get pretty fast. Ponies are better for younger riders in Barrels, if you are young. But Quarters are excellent in this division!

Good luck and have fun =]

  4. i think a quarter horse because they are very atheletic and thats what ive seen most people using for barrels.

  5. yes quarter horses are common and do good at barrel racing, but that doesnt mean there arent other good breeds for barrel racing.

this is a typical breed question, i'd like to suggest that you instead of looking for a breed, look for specific horse... one with good conformation, good personality, likes doing his job (barrel racing), and you like riding.

    that's only a suggetion.

  6. maybe first you should get some experience with horses.

  7. Honestly? Breed-wise Quarter Horses tend to rule the barrel racing area as do paints but don't rule out other breeds. I used to Pole-bend with a Standardbred. Arabs and thoroughbreds haven't done too shabby either. It all depends on what horses are available in your area. I would suggest something that you won't outgrow and a little larger in build. But the best thing you can do is get out into the market and try out a few horses that are available and decide what's best for you, don't base your decision on breed alone.

  8. Quarter horse, definately. They are fast, agile, and hard workers. Nicknamed the "do it all" horse, they are pretty much good at anything, but seem to excel in western sports more than other breeds. And as it has been said, "they can turn on a dime and toss you back 9 cents change"

If you don't want a quarter horse though, Arbians are becoming increasingly popular in western sports. But I would go with something a little stockier and lower to the ground (the long legs can be a problem sometimes).

  9. well it depends on what you like most girls like arabians but they just dont have the motor or the width needed for fast starts or hard cornering so my wife likes a half quater half arab me i get the horse for the job little short hot rod quater horse for ripping it up but its more than that for me I look at the horses back when it is performing and see if it is a balenced smoth ride like put them in the round pen and  push them through a couple of hard out side turns see if the horse is good and smooth under his own weight and if some one is riding them dose the horse stay under the rider and are they unseated at all during the performance like my mare fergy she gets it and stops and turns and I mean hard and its like she is always under your butt and smoth trot canter hard stop she is just a blast to ride but she is bred she is doc bar and once you have had a doc bar you will never go back its like buying a bird dog they just love to go fast and chase things

well have a great day and who knows if you ask God he might give you a hot rod sports car horse like mine

  10. probably a quarter horse or paint.

  11. Quarter Horse is the generally the best choice on a broud spectrem. But if you ar going to by one do not, I repeat NOT, just go off the breed. have someone come with you that knows and is experienced with barrel racing.

    What to look for:

    Good sprinter

Turns well (this is trained and can be learned with practice)

    Big hindquarters

  12. Quarter horses are used pretty commonly, and Paints are Quarter horses so those would be okay. I've heard of many Arabs that do very well at the barrel's as well.

  13. It really depends on the horse ittself, but Quarter Horses are recognized for being generally good at barrel racing

  14. Quarter Horse is the way to go for barrel racing. By Quarter Horse has had Morgan training( don't ask me why) and He looks beautiful when he barrel races so we usually get extra point (SECRET)

Quarter horses have that ability to get adrenalin flowing and just go! They also know how to turn the corner VERY tightly.

  15. Generally quarter horses take the top ribbons.  However if you learn conformation there are also top spots held by some of the morgans and even mustangs that are built with the older quarter horse like build (actually it is the other way around the quarter horse build actually came from them..

  16. A quarter Horse would be best. But your best bet is to ask someone that knows something about horses which would be best. A friend of mine had a Quarter Horse and  she used it for barrel raceing. Good luck

  17. definately a quarter horse becuase they are really fast and thats mostly what they are who are barrel racers, cutting horses, roping, all that fun stuff
