Question:

What breed of rabbit is a good companion for a guinea pig?

Here's the thing. My sister got 2 guinea pigs a 4 or 5 months ago. They were relatively young guinea pigs and became great companions. However, a few months after owning the pair, they had to be separated because of a injury (not caused by the other guinea pig). During the separation, we learned that one was a boy. >.< My sister took the female to her apartment and I got stuck with a very unhappy, lonely guinea pig who is used to a cage mate

I don't want to get another guinea pig but the male needs a companion. I was told that rabbits and guinea pigs make good cage mates. The cage I have is big enough for a small rabbit to share with him, no more then 4 pounds is my guess.

I was recently looking into small rabbit breeds and would like some suggestions.

  1. Do not put a rabbit and guinea pig together, the male guinea pig may try to get fresh with the rabbit, and the rabbit could injure the pig, as they have very strong back legs. Also their nutritional needs are slightly different. I have had guinea pigs for years, they will do fine on their own. Also, guinea pigs can breed at a very young age, your sister may have babies soon.

  2. rabbits and guinea pigs do not make good cage mates.

The rabbit will become dominant and bully the guinea pig.

Your best getting another guinea pig a rabbit ill just injure it or maybe even kill the guinea.

  3. Rabbits and guinea's can't talk to each other, like rabbit-rabbit or guinea-guinea, so they will become lonely.

Rabbits also like to cuddle up together.. but guinea pigs although are very sociable like to keep their space...so your guinea pig will get fustrated, and the rabbit lonely

Although they may become 'friends' when rabits get excited they hop, and could really hurt your pig wih their powerful legs.

I seriously think you should just get another guinea, (which is younger, as they;re will be less fighting) or just give him extra attention and keep him on his own.

  4. Rabbits are okay mates for them. (I just would not get a girl rabbits if you have a boy guniea). Get a dwarf rabbit. They stay small.

  5. No, rabbits and guinea pigs don't make good cage mates. They are completely different species and don't communicate. The rabbit will bully the guinea pig and might hurt it/ not let it eat/take it's treats and you'll end up with an unhappy guinea pig. Guinea pigs don't do well on their own and should always have another guinea pig as a companion. Guinea pigs can die from loneliness, sounds dumb but they can.

You might be able to bond him with a young male not isn't mature yet. Or you can get him neuteured and get him a lady friend. Definatly don't get a rabbit, it's a bad idea. Hope I helped!

  6. Netherland dwarf rabbit

  7. You need to find a bunny was a VERY passive personality so it's won't bully the guinea pig. It is possible for them to be friends. Mini lops are often bonded with them.

  8. Contrary to the other answers, I have had a guinea pig and a rabbit be great playmates. They both had separate spaces in case they wanted time alone, but they were both just very friendly to each other. The rabbit was a Jersey Wooly and he was about two years old at the time of the introduction. The guinea pig was a friendly American and she was about a year old. Jersey Woolies are small, but they are a lot of up keep. Maybe a Polish or a Netherland Dwarf would be better (although they can be more tempermental). Good luck.

  9. I would imagine any of the dwarf breeds would be small enough. One caveat, however. Both bunny AND Guinea pig MUST be neutered. That is the secret of keeping rabbits & guinea pigs together. I have 2 rabbits & 3 guinea pigs all together in one big C&C cage and they all get along fine. They are ALL fixed.
