  1. it looks like a Russian (horse field)tortoise, the Russian tortoise only has four toes on its foot which is what distinguishes it from other testudo species, if it has 5 toes it is possible it is a small Greek or dessert tortoise, if you find a reptile vet i am sure they will identify it for you for free, best of luck hope you get the little fella well again it is a nice looking tortoise

  2. That is not a gopher tortoise. It is ether a Hermann's tortoise or a Russian tortoise. Neither are native to this country so it looks like you found someone's pet since I know you're in Illinois.

  3. It in a way looks like a russian, but i think it is more of a gopher tortoise, ILLEGAL! Nurse it back to health, then take it to a petstore were you can ask what you need to keep it, (licenses/ supplies)-because I don't know were you live.

  4. he looks like a herman's tortoise. they are usually found in europe.

    turtle hobbyist-19yrs.

  5. It is hard to tell from this photo- a good shot of the shell and belly would really help. I agree with Madsnake that it looks most like a Mediterranean species- Greek, Russian, or Hermanns.

It is truely impossible to accurately care for an animal if you do not know what it is, but you can start treating all three of these about the same.

You will find good cares at http://www.tortoisetrust.org and http://www.tlady.clara.net/id16.htm

    Good luck!

  6. what state are you in? looks like a box turtle of sorts.

  7. It looks like a gopher tortoise..illegal to possess in most or all states.
