I have had dogs all my life and 4 months ago lost our old bulldog - we feel ready to take on another dog/s but whereas we are used to the bigger breeds, bulldogs and rotties etc we now have two children who would like a more active pet than their previous beloved bulldog and i think as a family we might suit 2 smaller dogs who can be with us all the time and in most situations. My hubby still prefers the bully breeds can anyone suggest a smaller breed that might suit kids are 5 and 9 and as a say used to dogs with the right amount of respect. we have trawelled all the rescue sites with no luck.

  1. There are lots of breeds that are good with children and are on the smaller size.  Most dogs can be raised with children, but cocker spaniels, springer spaniels, mini poodles, shelties (although they are herding dogs and will "herd" the kids, but you can train them not to).  I think any of the medium-small breeds are good, but I would not go with a tiny breed like toy poodles, yorkies, chihuahua and the like.  Please get your pup from a good breeder if you are going the puppy route, you have a much better chance that you will get a better temperament.  Have you looked on petfinder.com?  I know you have exhausted the shelters in your area, but perhaps you can find a suitable pup there.  Good luck.

  2. CAVALIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL!i have 3 children aged 3,5 and 7 and i have 5 cavaliers they are the perfect family pet, gentle, loving and loyal.they love cuddles and attention from adults and children but are also active when on walks.i recommend cavaliers to any familey!

  3. Irish Terrier

They are loyal beautiful red coloured dogs, good guard dogs and very loyal.

If not the Irish Terrier try the Whippet or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

  4. My daughters just got a Bichon Frise, they are adorable and good with children. Google it, pics

  5. theres 1 thing about small dogs... they can b nasty.

even though this is a big dog, i would suggest a golden retriever bc theyre gentle, fun nd cute. my golden is 3 nd we had her since 3 months... she has NEVER bit someone.... they dnt bite.

  6. I suggest:

    Mix breeds

    Doberman

    Border Collie

    Lab

Jack Russel (hard to train, and they have a natural bad temper sometimes if not trained properly)

    Poodle

    ****-sue(?)

I have a Doberman / Shepherd / Lab / Husky mix at 50 - 70 pounds, she's great with kids of all ages, well trained (off-leash trained, comes back on command). If you want a dog for your kids, I suggest getting a young dog or puppy, rescues can have problems...

  7. Bichon Frise

  8. Yorkies are lovely if you train them properly and they stay small! So cute! and well behaved! - IF YOU TRAIN THEM PROPERLY! but considering you've had dogs before, you should be fine!

  9. catahoula leopard dog.

  10. Think about a Rhodesian ridge back.  Great dog.  You may have good luck with them.  Not a big dog but a good size dog.  Check out the web site.

  11. golden retriever as a big dog, maltese west highland terrier for a small dog. Golden Retrievers need alot of excercise but are adorable and good companions, they are extremely gentle and i grew up with one. Malteses and West Highlands are more lap dogs but still good companions however they can bark alot and dont always have the best tempers. If you want a low-key dog it is best to get something that has a short coat that does not malt. Another good breed is a labradoodle as they dont shed and are a medium size!

  12. labradoodle!! they is cool and i hav a puppy  labradoodle and se is gorgeous and can be bouncybut mostly calm

  13. Hi

We have a bulldog and are looking into getting another dog.  We did get a Springer Spaniel who was a complete nutter but unfortuantely he got parvo virus and died - he was only 4 months old.

Anyway, a Springer is very active and he loved the children and if he had not got ill he would have just grown up to be a big nutter!

We are now looking at getting a French Bulldog - I just love the bully breed and after having read a number of articles on Frenchies, they seem to be more "active" than our English Bully.

Whatever you decide - good luck.

  14. ! am sure you will get a long list of potential smaller dogs to keep as a family pet but these are my my personal favourites.

My personal favourite small dogs are the Jack Russell and Border Collie..

They are loving, loyal, highly intelligent and love to play.

They fit into a loving family atmosphere very quickly and are more than happy with children.
