  1. if u dont have bread eat cake, queen told the people.

    rest history

  2. A variety of things that all came together at the same time -- Louis XV almost bankrupted the country with all of his wars, and Louis XVI's support of the American Revolution, in order to stick it to their perennial enemies, the English, pushed the economy of the country to the brink.  There was a widening gulf between the poor and the aristocracy, and the aristocracy had not developed a good sense of "noblisse oblige" -- as a result, there was an ever-growing underclass that was having to bear more and more taxation to dig France out of debt, and were increasingly desperate for basics, such as food.

The common man in France was inspired by the events of the American Revolution, and equally disgusted by what they perceived to be the excesses of the monarchy and the aristocracy.

Louis XVI was condemned to death primarily because of the Brunswick Manifesto, an edict from Prussia that France would not be invaded IF the monarchy was unharmed.  The threat of invasion did not save Louis' live -- in fact, it probably hastened it, because it appeared that Louis was aiding the enemies of France.  At that point, the decision was made to execute him.  It was not an overwhelming vote -- 361 for, 288 against, but it was enough.  The Convention elected that he should be put to death, and he was guillotined in January, 1793.  Marie Antoinette followed in October, primarily to reduce a focus for remaining monarchists -- and because she was just unpopular, period.

BTW, Marie Antoinette was not the one who said, "Let them eat cake," as is popularly reported.  It was probably said by Marie-Therese, the wife of Louis XIV.  In fact, it doesn't really refer to "cake" as we think of sweet confection today.  When Marie-Therese said it, "French law required bakers to sell loaves at fixed prices and fancy loaves had to be sold at the same price as basic breads. This was aimed at preventing bakers from selling just the more profitable expensive products. The "let them eat brioche" (a form of cake made of flour, butter and eggs) would have been a sensible suggestion in the face of a flour shortage as it would have allowed the poor to eat what would otherwise have been unaffordable. It's rather a mouthful, so to speak, but if the phrase had been reported as 'let them buy cake at the same price as bread' we might now think better of the French nobility."

  3. Well the French royal family lived well while their citizens suffered from poverty and hunger. When the king and queen were assassinated, that symbolized a new change for France. It showed that they wanted freedoms like the USA.
