What bugs attacked me on Fire Island?

Bugs swarmed me after i stepped on the grass on Fire Island (off of Long Island, NY). They were black and were about twice as big as a mosquito. I would swat them and they wouldn't leave, and now I have about 11 itchy bites from them on my legs. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, and if they know what these bugs were. They weren't bothering me until i stepped in the high grass. Thanks!

Are you sure these things didn't have a tanish tinge to them? If they did they could've horseflies or deerflies. Those are nasty little guys. They give you more painful bites than mosquitos.
