My ROTC instructor once told me that there were a few buildings that were required to post the united states flags, i remember that any federal buildings, and post offices, but i do remember there were a few others. Can anyone offer any incite to this?

  1. State buildings also fly the flag.

  2. I am pretty sure schools all are required to post a flag too... at least it seems like it..

  3. Depends what you mean by "required".

There are no *laws* requiring anyone - government or private - to fly the US flag. Many organizations, however, especially governmental ones, have rules or policies calling for it.

The US Post Office, for example, has a rule calling for their offices to fly a flag. It's not legally "required" though - and many post offices that open straight out onto a sidewalk, with no forecourt, don't have one. Likewise, the Military has procedures calling for military establishments to fly the flag - but you won't find one at a recruiting office inside a mall.
