What burns more gas? Turning or vehicle off and on or letting the engine idle for about 5 minute?

Idling will burn more gas in five minutes than shutting it off and restarting it.

Mythbusters did this.. you waste more gas turning the car on and off than letting it idle.

If you idle for over 5 minutes, you're wasting gas. If you're under 3 minutes, then leave it running. With the price of gas, though, it might make more sense to shut it down for fewer minutes. Most fuel injected cars won't use much more, just carburetor types that you press the pedal when restarting. Newer cars don't need that. I don't know which type of car Mythbusters used, carb or FI.
