  1. You must check to see which interfaces your PC and TV have in common.

If your computer and TV have S-Video ports, then an S-Video cable.

If your computer and TV have VGA ports, then a VGA cable.

If your computer and TV have DVI ports, then a DVI cable.

If your computer and TV have HDMI ports, then an HDMI cable.

Sorry, it's not that I mean to be sarcastic, it's just that it really depends on your video card and television set.  You can also get adapter cables (ex. S-Video to RCA) if your television and video card do not have any ports in common.

  2. It depends on what type of external monitor port your laptop has.  It could be VGA, S-VHS, DVI-I, HDMI.  Each type uses a different shaped connector.  It also depends on what type(s) of inputs are available on your television.  Those could be co-axial, S-VHS, DVI-I, HDMI.

Check the owners manual for your laptop and for your television.  This way you can purchase the correct cable on your first trip to Best Buy.
