  1. no less than an 18x18. people at a pet store should have an i dea if you tell them that. and watch your bar spacing. about 1/2 and inch. you don't want it to be able to stick it's head through. most 18x18's have a standard bar spacing anyway.

  2. If you want a large cage for your cockatiel, I'd recommend the HQ13221.  The bar spacing is 1/2" and the powder coating is very good.  I understand it's also done very good in lead testing (meaning it is well within the safe limits).  Windy City Parrot usually has a good price on it - somewhere around $150.00 including shipping.  The dimensions are 32" wide x 21" deep x 35" high and it sits on a stand.  I've been through a number of cages and this is among the best, particularly for the price, and comes in a number of colors.

Though there are no feeder doors, there are two front doors and 2 nestbox doors which you can use to access the cage.  I just stainless steel bolt-on dishes for my birds.

Here's a link to Windy City Parrot:  http://www.windycityparrot.com/

Look under "Bird Cages" and then "Flight Cages".

Congratulations on looking for a nice, roomy cage for your tiel!  He or she is a lucky bird :-)

  3. I buy my cages off eBay and won't go under 20x20x31 for a single Cockatiel.

For a single Cockatiel a 22x22x36 is adequate unless you are going to fill the cage with toys and ropes and such, but if your tiel will have regular free flight time and other out of cage time and you don't plan on adopting friends for him/her that should be adequate.

Standard bar spacing for a Cockatiel sized bird is 5/8".  Much bigger and he can put his head through the bars and much smaller he can't see out!  Also stay away from decorative scroll work and stuff like that.  On top of being a safety hazard it's harder to clean when you have all that extra material on the cage.

Go to eBay and look up the vendors biradise2 and wpic-trading.  I've bought many cages from these two vendors and they sell quality cages at a fraction of the price of pet stores and other online dealers and they ship very fast.
