  1. That kind of depends on the type of hamster you are getting, whether it is a syrian or a dwarf......but that only matters on the size of the cage, the size of the tubes, and the size of the spaced between the wires in a wire cage.  The plastic cages with tubes are difficult to clean (some people have no problem, but most do) and after being taken apart a few times, they start to break, and you will need to make sure that the tubes are given good cleanings.  Most of the tubes are too small for a full grown syrian, and it is possible for the hammie to get stuck!

For the best "escape proof" cage, you would want an aquarium, they are almost impossible to escape from (unless there are toys that reach the top inside the cage) and you can buy a screen top wherever you buy the tank.  As someone else stated, these do have poor ventilation, but I had no problem with that on my first hamster.

For best ease of cleaning and durability, wire cages are recommended by many.  Try to find one that has the wires coated because hammies tend to chew on the bars and that will hurt their teeth.  To avoid the bar chewing further, provide plenty of small wooden chew toys.

The most important thing though, is to NEVER use pine or cedar bedding!  These have a strong smell to them, and whereas it may smell good to you, it is toxic to the hamster!  Use aspen or a paper-based bedding.

I have a dwarf currently, and use a wire cage that has a couple tubes and two platforms.  The platforms are adjustable, so i occasionally re-arrange them to keep the cage from getting too boring for the hammie.  You should get plenty of toys and rotate them every month or so, that way your sister's future hammie will never be bored!

    I hope that helps!

  2. i say a crittertrail two, crittertrail classic, or crittertrail one.

  3. well you could get a fish tank, but that is poor ventalation and it would get really hot, but i know a friend who has one and she has a fish tank with a metal wire part on top with levels up there for if they want. you shoul get one that has a wheel, or a wheel to put in it. if you have a tottally wire one the wires should be very close together other wose they will escape, trust me, and they should have lots of different activities to do, wheel, tunnels, a wood block to chew on, and so forth. i would suggest a wire cage with one of those bottoms that slides out for easy cleaning.

    hope i helped

Allow her to help make a bin cage with you. Years from now, she'll remember that expierence as much as she remembers her hamster! You can pick out some neat accessories that match her personality - just make sure there is a hamster safe wheel! One of our bin cages is entirely outfit in pink things - even the bedding (carefresh comes in colors).

These cages are MUCH better for the hamster and MUCH easier for a kid to interact with their pet.

One big benefit of the bins is the lids come entirely off to access the hamster. Cages that you reach through a small door to get to a hamster often ends up with a bitten finger and people thinking their hamster is mean.

  11. Well there are many cages that will fit just right for a hamster. You can find many at a local petstore like Pet Co. They have a lot of cages that have slides, tunnels, and even bars for the hamster to chew or play on. They come in all diffrent colors so you can pick the one that is best for the hamster. There are also plain cages that have no slides, bars, or tunnels. I would get the one that has the jungle gym (slides, tunnels, and bars.) because it is more fun for the hamster. Make sure your sister takes it out a lot because it may want to run around a little. And if you are afraid it will run away get it a ball it can run in that is also sold at Pet Co. Also when it is running around wether in a ball or not be sure to block off ALL stair cases that are around because that is BIG danger to the hamster. It will get hurt or it may even pass away. Ok well I think that is all the information you need and if you need more then ask another question and I will look for it. Ok well I hope this helps!
