What caliber of gun is most popular with police these days?

Very hard question to answer. It really depends on the departments policies, individual officers preference and wether or not the department mandates a certain type of weapon. It varies widley.

.40 S&W by far is taking over as the most popular caliber. However 9mm and .45ACP are both still popular as well. It depends on the department, state, ect. A lot of departments let you choose between one of the above.

Our department has followed the trend, and gone from .357 magnum revolvers to 9mm automatics, then to 40 caliber automatics.  Most departments use either 9mm or 40 cal in this area, with a few using 45 acp.

All to often they use tasers which do by the way kill people from time to time.  I hope someday police won't even carry lethal weapons and get something very effective to stop a crimminal without injury.  But that is far off and hasn't been created yet!

For revolvers it's the .357 Magnum, for semiautos it's the .40 Caliber, the 9mm and the .45 ACP.

In my country Police uses:9x19 Parabellum (Luger) or 9x18 Makarow for the pistols. The first one for Glock17 or 19 and Walther P99. The second one is used for very archaic types of pistols: P-64 and P-83.

The .40 caliber is by far the most common police firearm in my experience. The 9mm has generally fallen out of favor, though a few PDs stick with them (including a few very large police departments). The .38 is a thing of the past except as a backup weapon.

However, the .45 seems to be making a huge comeback the last 10 years or so. A few years back my PD switched from the Glock 22 (a .40) to the Glock 21 (a .45) as have a few other metro departments.
