  1. well a comp xe284 has a lot of grunt and lope to it. heres a clip of one in my sb400 elky. may be a little shy on bottom end power in your car depending on torque converter and rear gearing though...

  2. That is a race  car if yours sounds like that make sure  you have ticket money. That is not the cam, it is the headers.

  3. A 396 isn't exactly stock for and 86 . and this one is not so street-able  the power band is way off unless you have 5:88's or so gearing

there are many factors effecting the sound

    1) intake a single plane will be more loopy than a dual plane

    (2) Headers /exhaust balanced headers will perform better .  mufflers do effect the sound larger flow-masters do sound louder but smaller ones actually work better but will be quit quite when working right.(has to do with airflow)

    (3) The heads , there is one set of heads on the 396 that works well for performance while the 454 has 2 or 3 that will interchange

    (4) the compression ratio which also relates to the heads and pistons

    (etc.)

A Edlbrock performer plus may be on the small side for what you are asking

There are some factory stout cams availible that could suprise you. for the lope you don't want a roller system
