What came first: The waffle or the waffle iron?

Did they make waffles before they had waffle irons?

And if so how did they make them?

this is not researched and is probably wrong, but i wanted to have some fun.

once upon a time tim was making pancakes when he herd on the tv something exiting.(I'm tired i can't think of anything specific) he ran to the living room while leaving the pancake on top of the spachula ( the ones with the square holes) when he returned the pancake came out in the texture of a waffle on one side. he saw the peculiar pancake and decided to make the rest in the same manner for they created pockets for the syrup. later he decided to buy another spuchula and make a devise that created the square waffle texture on the pancake.
