  1. Yes, kilts date back to the 16th century:

    But... look up 'kilt' any dictionary, and you will find a variation of the definition "a knee-length pleated skirt"... so, it's difficult to refute the kilt itself being a form of skirt....

    And no, I don't believe the kilt was the earliest form of skirt... there's apparently even evidence for an ancient 'string' skirt (similar to a grass skirt) in carvings estimated to be about 23,000 to 25,000 years old: http://members.aol.com/doder1/legwear1.h...

    So uh, I definitely say skirts came first :o)
