Mother and couple of reasons.

1.  If your religious I'm pretty sure god created everything as a whole.

2.  If your more into evolution and were all organisms brought together by microscopic whatevers, then I would say that the environment itself wouldn't be able to keep a baby alive providing it with all the things a newly formed fetus should have.
