cats and cat-like animals were around before canines.. the mouse/cat like animals that modern mammals are descended from had very little change to make untill they were disctinctly feline

If you are talking about domestic and not wild... that would be dogs.

They both appear in the archaelogical record at about the same time, when they diverged from a common ancestor, the "miacids" about 40 million years ago, during the Eocene.
