  4. great britain, back in the old days when people got away with calling themselves 'great' lol. think it'd be frowned upon now tho...lol

  5. Great Britain U.K came much later

  6. Great Britain as it was used to distinguish England from Brittany where William 1 originated. Uk did not come into existence until the act of union with Scotland James(I or VI) and also Ireland later

  7. great britain came first. UK is newer.

  8. great britain, because before it it was called BRITTANNIA

  9. The phrase United Kingdom did not appear until the union of Great Britain with Ireland in 1800 - changed to Northern Ireland in 1922. I can see why this is a lively subject of debate because there are so many misconceptions about it.  For example, Great Britain includes only the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. The British Isles is a geographical - not political - term, and includes not only all of Ireland but all of the islands down from the Orkneys to the Channel Islands.

At the grass roots level, the term UK was rarely heard before WWll - probably because people, other than servicemen, did not go abroad to anything like the extent that they do now. There wasn't much need for even the term "England" until some test match or international football match was at hand.

  10. Great Britain.....United Kingdom includes Northern Ireland, but until Ireland gained its Independence, there was no northern Ireland, just Ireland, so GB came first.

Old Know all, knows bugger all.

  11. Great Britain came first (when the Scottish King James became King of England following Queen Elizabeth's death).

"Great Britain" is also the name of the main island of the UK.

Great Britain evolved into a union of England and Scotland from a personal union in 1603 with the Union of Crowns. The political merger was in 1707, with the merger of the two parliaments. The United Kingdom didn't come about until 1801.

  12. Great Britain.  It's a geographical area and was here before the people or the politics.  When Julius Caesar came across these islands, he called them Britain and the biggest one he called Great Britain.

The United Kingdom only came about when England and Scotland united in 1707.

  13. Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales

UK = England, Scotland, Wales and N Ireland.

    Great Britain came first.

  14. great britain = wales, scotland and england

UK = great britain and northern ireland (it use to be the whole of ireland, until they wanted to part, however some irish people wanted to unite with great britain, thats the northen ireland)

    So great britain came first

    Hope it answers your question.

The United Kindom is more of an artifact created to form a community of Great Britain and its Commonwealth colonies (now countries)
